Picturing tiny displays that can deliver a perfect image directly to the surface of the eyes

Flat panel displays are increasingly common and growing larger as consumer products. The challenge is to create high-resolution microdisplays (only a centimeter across) that project information directly to the eyes of the user. With Leti’s expertise, this challenge is being met.

Each pixel in Leti's microdisplay is composed of four-color sub-pixels and measures just 10 x 10 microns.

Organic light-emitting-device (OLED) technology eliminates the bulky backlight and liquid crystal array needed by typical flat displays.

Leti's microdisplays use a silicon integrated circuit as the backplane on which OLEDs can be deposited. This novel approach limits possible electrode materials to CMOS-compatible metals, but ensures consistent transistor performance.

The CMOS substrate will eventually allow wafer-scale integration of complete displays (i.e. simultaneous fabrication of several hundred components).

Leti creates another start-up

Leti launched MicroOLED to capitalize on the tremendous market opportunities in this technology.

The company will commercialize-next generation microdisplays, prototypes were delivered in 2008 and a pilot production line is being set up.

MicroOLED and Leti are working together to improve spatial resolution, reduce power consumption, and to develop new innovations. For example, a typical application might integrate these displays into "information glasses," giving users hands-free access to key data.
