Putting products that store personal information to the test

The security of smart cards, bank cards, e-passports and other products that contain personal information is critical. Leti’s Centre d’Evaluation de la Securité des Systèmes d’Information plays a key role in assuring users their data is safe.

CESTI’s mission is to determine whether security components and devices are designed and manufactured to prevent breaches and whether they are capable of withstanding attacks from terrorists, criminals or others. Products that pass CESTI’s evaluation are certified by ANSSI (Agence Nationale pour la Sécurité des Systèmes d’Information) for use.

In the last 10 years, CESTI has evaluated many security products, including 80 percent of latest-generation French bank cards, the Vitale 2 cards, e-passports and identity cards. The lab also analyzes the security of sensors, devices and other components used in security systems on public infrastructure and industrial facilities.

CESTI is evaluating products from leading companies such as Samsung, ATMEL, STMicrolectronics, Gemalto, Sagem Sécurité, and OCS. The lab is part of Leti’s Strategic Security and Defense Programs, which promotes the development of innovative security solutions for information and communication (ICT) technologies for transfer to the defense and commercial markets.

“CESTI’s objective is to be a vital reference lab that strengthens the position of Europe, and specifically France, as a leader in the evaluation of high-security devices.” Alain Merle, Director of Strategic Security and Defense Programs at CESTI

Highlights 2009

Our focus in 2009 included evaluating the capability of contactless systems, such as smart cards, to prevent eavesdropping and relay threats. We also evaluated the capabilities of biometrics, such as fingerprint-based systems, to withstand fraudulent use.

In 2009, Leti (hardware) and Sogeti (software) launched a partnership to build a security offer that provides customers of both entities a single entry point for all their ICT security needs, including systems, software-and-hardware evaluation and expertise.
